Casting rumors have circulated for months now, but this CinemaBlend.com photo of Philip Seymour Hoffman as Christopher Nolan's Penguin is just too intriguing to ignore. Yes, even CinemaBlend itself recognizes that claims that the photo is from a studio makeup test are almost certainly bunk and that it's probably just a really good Photoshop job. Nevertheless, I kinda dig the crooked eyebrows and cracked-dome, and it has me rethinking my initial aversion to a Penguin in the next movie.

Charles Barkley arrested for DWISadly, no mugshot is available...yet! At any rate, Charles Barkley was arrested early Wednesday in Arizona on charges of driving while impaired. Police say they noticed Barkley, 45, running a stop sign in the Old Town section of Scottsdale at about 1:30 a.m. Officers pulled Barkley over, took him to a nearby mobile command post, and administered a blood test after declining to submit to a breath test, according to Gilbert, Ariz., police Lt. Eric Shuhandler. They said he was cooperative during the whole thing. Gotta give Barkley props for staying in the news! Thanks Charles!

Box Office Report: It's a doggone Christmas for "Marley & Me"

Things didn't quite go as expected at the box office this weekend, since the film I predicted to be No. 1 actually came in a shocking third! underestimated the built-in audience for this pic based on the bestselling book. For whateverWhat happened? Well, let's try and make sense of this craziness. Marley & Me, the new family comedy/weeper from Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, was officially crowned top dog this weekend when it grossed a staggering $37 million over the 3-day weekend and a $51.7 million 4-day take. Hollywood reason, audiences are in love with dogs in films, no matter what context (who remembers Beverly Hills Chihuahua? Or rather, who'd like to forget it?) At any rate, chalk this up for a huge victory for Aniston, who even bested her ex husband at the box office, by surpassing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at the box office. The Oscar heavy film, also starring Cate Blanchett, was able to bank close to $27.2 million over the 3-day weekend and a pretty impressive $39 million over the 4-day holiday. Good? Yes, most certainly, but it would have been bigger if its running time hadn't been 2 hours and 47 minutes long. Still its box office was bigger than expected in 2,988 locations, proving skeptics wrong that this would be "Hollywood's most expensive art flick". Bedtime Stories had been expected to lead the pack this weekend since it was Disney-branded family fare starring Adam Sandler with the widest release of 3,681 locations and its 99-minute running time allowed for extra screenings daily. Blame all those kiddie matinees and their half-price tickets. Or the awful reviews that hurt word of mouth. However, the film was able to earn $28.2 million over the 3-day period and $30 million over the long weekend, enough to snag third place. Valkyrie, the long running Tom Cruise joke-of-a-film where he plays a German officer who wishes to overtake Hitler, was a semi-hit, with reviews that tilted more negative than positive hurting the opening weekend. The film grossed $21.5 million over the 3-day period and $30 million over the 4-days. Yes Man rounded out the Top 5 with $16.5 million over the short weekend and a $22.4 million longer weekend take. Not every comic book can become a hit movie. Movie analysts didn't expect much life from The Spirit, which finished in 9th place. Lionsgate's action flick only grossed $10.3 million over the four-day holiday. Negative reviews and bad word of mouth are killing the film. Finally, Revolutionary Road posted an incredibly strong location average of $64,000 since it opened on three screens on Friday. The drama should do very well when it opens wide. The complete Top 10 appears below, which reflects the 4-day opening weekend.
--
1. Marley & Me -- $51.7 million
2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button -- $39.0 million
3. Bedtime Stories -- $38.6 million
4. Valkyrie -- $30 million
5. Yes Man -- $22.4 million
6. Seven Pounds -- $18.2 million
7. The Tale of Desperaux -- $11.4 million
8. The Day the Earth Stood Still -- $10.6 million
9. The Spirit -- $10.4 million
10. Doubt -- $7.1 million

"Gilligan’s Island" reboot full steam ahead...with Michael Cera??
Sherwood Schwartz, creator of The Brady Bunch, and his son Lloyd Schwartz are finally moving ahead on a big screen version of Gilligan's Island, the 1969 sitcom which the legendary producer also created. And if the two Schwartzs have it their way, Michael Cera will be slipping into that famous red shirt and white hat as Gilligan. They are also currently trying to nab Beyonce as sexy movie star Ginger. Really? A black Ginger? I'm all for avante garde casting, but this seems a bit extreme for my taste. While the deal to make a new movie is apperarently with wet ink still, the producers are excited to get a start on it. The Gilligan's Island movie doesn't have a set start date at this time, and no actors have been signed just yet. You can expect to hear more on this project in the very near future.

Weep while Judy Garland sings a wistful carol

Box Office Preview: "Bedtime Stories" will lead the pack of holiday films
Christmas has come and gone in an instant and did you happen to notice the sudden surge of new films that have recently hit multiplexes? Yes, that smell in the air is the Oscars! Studios are rolling out the stars and opening five wide releases on Thursday just in time for the busy holiday while other films move from limited to more wide release. Last week's leaders -- Jim Carrey's Yes Man and Will Smith's Seven Pounds -- are still out there, and other Oscar contenders are inching into more cities. Doubt makes the widest jump, to 1,200+ screens, while Frost/Nixon, Gran Torino, The Reader, and Slumdog Millionaire expand. With no further ado, let's get right to it: Adam Sandler and his Bedtime Stories has the best shot of cracking the top spot thanks to the target of adults and kids. Sandler's new film has broad appeal and should play to kids of all ages while parents won't mind sitting through either especially with the Disney brand name attached. Opening in 3,681 theaters, "Bedtime Stories" could debut with about $28 million over three days and $37 million over the four-day Thursday-to-Sunday period. Unless you live under a rock you must have seen Jennifer Aniston or Owen Wilson on TV peddling their new movie Marley & Me, based on the popular book. The PG-rated film about the trials and tribulations of a couple during the years it owns a rambunctious pooch is hoping to draw interest from a number of audience segments. Fox hopes that women will connect with the emotional drama, men will dig the story of a family guy and his dog, and kids will relate to the fun animal antics. Based on this, I figure the film will open around $28 million over the four-day weekend. Curiosity is running high, what with all the Oscar talk, and the promise of seeing Brad Pitt as an elderly baby with a funny voice. (Fun fact: Did you know he was once married to Marley & Me's Jennifer Aniston? Pretty sure I read that somewhere…) That being said, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will open in third place this weekend and back almost $21 million over the four-day period. Fourth and fifth places are the sticking points this week, since Yes Man and Valkyrie are vying for these spots. The Jim Carrey comedy won a wintry weekend that left a lot of the country housebound. Odds are it fills a niche for people looking for a comedy, any comedy; enough to keep it in the upper reaches of the box office chart? Think positive… I think it will take fourth with $16 million, while negative reviews galore will keep Tom Cruise's "Valkyrie" out of reach in fifth place with $14 million over the weekend. And, finally, comic-book fans have been waiting eagerly for the Frank Miller-directed adaptation of the Will Eisner classic The Spirit. Comics fans will be there, but will big audiences look at what fans consider "stylish" and process it as "weird-looking"? With Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler, and Jennifer Aniston in the theaters next door, it may take more than Samuel L. Jackson as the Octopus to spread this movie's tentacles beyond its core. It should end up at the bottom end of the chart with a mere $6 million.Wednesday, December 24, 2008
Merry Christmas and all that other holiday stuff, but let's get to the stuff that really matters: The first round of Oscars ballots are due to be in the mail to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday. Yes, this Friday! Some 5,810 voting members will select which actors and movies will be nominated, with these picks then narrowed down to the nominees that will be announced at the Academy headquarters' Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Jan. 22 at 8:38 A.M. EST. A second round of ballots will be mailed out after the nomination announcement where members will cast their decisive votes to determine the winners at the February 22 awards in Hollywood. Most films are now finally emerging to a wide audience, with the likes of Revolutionary Road as one of the final films to open, even in limited release on Friday, the same day that ballots go out, with the intemtion of leaving the film fresh in voters' minds.

Reps deny Michael Jackson's illnessHave you heard those rumors that pop superstar Michael Jackson is ill? Well, claims that Jackson needs a lung transplant because of a rare respiratory disease is a "total fabrication," according to a statement released by Jackson's "official and sole spokesperson, Dr. Tohme Tohme" and issued by Los Angeles firm Scoop Marketing. Phew! I thought it was back to the Oxygen Tank for the 50-year old superstar.

Trailer Blazer: "Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian"
The plot is pretty simple here: Ben Stiller sees dead people. And dead animals. And dead presidents. Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian seems like one of those sequels where you wonder, "Why even bother to make this?" Amy Adams (as Amelia Earhart) and Bill Hader (as General Custer) are nice additions to the over-stuffed cast, but otherwise this looks less like a sequel to NATM and more like a genetic clone.

Box Office Report: Audiences say "Yes" to Jim Carrey
It was a battle for the ages: Jim Carrey, international man of comedy (and sometimes lesser dramas), took on Will Smith, international King of the Box Office (thanks to hits like Men in Black and Independence Day), and as I predicted, the former was able to beat out the latter in a smack down. As the dust settled on Sunday, it was clear that this battle belonged to Jim Carrey's Yes Man, the comedy that returned the funny man to his comedy roots. "Yes Man" was able to earn close to $18.2 million, certainly enough for a first place finish, but slightly down from what was the anticipated opening weekend gross. Has Carrey lost his once powerful name? Seems so, since this opening is more on course with fare like Fun with Dick and Jane (which eaned $14.6 million in its opening weekend) and The Number 23 (grossing $14.6 million in its opening.) At any rate, Carrey can gloat that he beat Will Smith at the box office since his Seven Pounds settled for second place with close to $16.0 million, based on very early estimates. This is the worst opening for Smith since Ali in 2001. So, what happened to poor Will? Well, let's face facts, this movie isn't the usual movie that most fans associate with Smith and it has a laid back campaign to hide that "twist ending" at the end. Universal's The Tale of Desperaux was able to capitalize on the kids' upcoming holiday vacation and actually scored a decent third place opening; the film grossed a respectable $10.5 million. The Day the Earth Stood Still landed (with a thud) in fourth place, and dropping a significant 67%, to earn an additional $10.2 million, while Four Christmases rounded out the Top 5 with $7.7 million. Also of note, is Mickey Rourke's comeback, The Wrestler: The film opened on Wednesday at 4 locations managing an outstanding $11,732 per-screen average. The extraordinarily well-reviewed movie was headed for a 3-day of $209,000, which will translate to an estimated $52,250 per location. That marks the second-best per-screen average of the year, trailing only the $60,236 debut of Frost/Nixon two weeks ago.The complete Top 10 appears below.1. Yes Man -- $18.2 million
2. Seven Pounds -- $16.0 million
3. The Tale of Desperaux -- $10.5 million
4. The Day the Earth Stood Still -- $10.2 million
5. Four Christmases -- $7.7 million
6. Twilight -- $5.2 million
7. Bolt -- $4.3 million
8. Slumdog Millionaire -- $3.2 million
9. Australia -- $2.3 million
10. Quantum of Solace -- $2.2 million

Box Office Preview: "Yes Man" figures to have the answer
Will Smith is a box office powerhouse. But so is Jim Carrey. Interesting dilemma we have on our hands at this weekend's box office. So, I must pose this question to you: Would audiences rather see Jim Carrey and his slightly-less-rubbery face resurrect the same comic schtick for Yes Man that made him a star or watch Will Smith save souls while running through the rain in Sony's spiritual tearjerker Seven Pounds? I think, due to the troubles and turmoil facing a lot of families this season, the answer will be funny. Yes Man looks to be the odds on favorite to take the top spot this weekend; I expect the new Carrey film to earn close to $26 million this weekend, that is if most of the East Coast fans can dig themselves out of a snowsotrm that's heading our way. Since Seven Pounds isn't a Will Smith-blows-stuff-up movie, one can't expect it to blow up at the box office like I Am Legend or Hancock. But it oughta do a bit less than The Pursuit of Happyness' $26.5 million opening—mostly because people don't know what to expect from it. Happyness had that tearjerking trailer. This has obscure references to random weights and measures; I'm predicting a close $23 million opening. The Day the Earth Stood Still will drop almost 60% this weekend, but that will be enough to give it a third place finish. Without the Pixar pedigree, great reviews (like Bolt got), or the word "Shrek" somewhere in the title, it's a tough go for a CG animated flick these days. Just ask Delgo. Therefore, look for The Tale of Desperaux to come in fourth with around $12 million. It's been a pretty good run for Four Christmases —$91.2 million and counting—and this'll likely be the last week in the top 5. As always, the complete Top 10 will appear here in Sunday.Thursday, December 18, 2008

Batman updates: The next Riddler is who???
According to some reports, the character of The Riddler has been cast for the sequel to The Dark Knight. And, believe it or not, Eddie Murphy (!) is the name being tossed around. The 47-year-old former Beverly Hills Cop was tapped by British director Christopher Nolan to reprise the role played by Jim Carrey in 1995’s Batman Forever. The studio has also reportedly signed up Transformers star Shia LaBeouf, 22, to play Robin. Rachel Weisz is rumored to be taking up the Catwoman role. Is this a bad move? I mena, do we really need Robin back????

Madonna & Guy Ritchie’s Divorce Settlement: $76 Million
Madonna and ex-husband Guy Ritchie have reached a divorce settlement of at least $76 million, her rep tells The Associated Press. Madonna's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, says that as part of the divorce agreement, Madonna has given Guy between $76 million to $92 million, which includes the value of the couple’s country home Ashcombe in western England. "I'd assume it's one of the largest payouts ever in a divorce settlement," Rosenberg told the AP. It's no wonder she's called "the material girl."

Big changes in store for "American Idol"American Idol fans may be in for some changes in the coming season. Among the biggest changes: the show will air fewer audition weeks featuring “fewer bad singers and more ‘aspirational’ singers”; instead of a Top 24, the show will feature a Top 36 which will eventually be narrowed down to 12. Some familiar features will also reportedly be altered. According sources, the Wild Card round will make its return while the charity-based Idol Gives Back doesn’t look to be returning this season.

Hugh Jackman to Host 81st Academy Awards
As I reported much earlier today, Hugh Jackman will host the 81st Academy Awards telecast, producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Bill Condon announced. This will be Jackman’s first time center stage at the Oscar show, although he has previously been a presenter. “Hugh Jackman is a consummate entertainer and an internationally renowned movie star,” said Mark and Condon in a joint statement. “He also has style, elegance and a sense of occasion. Hugh is the ideal choice to host a celebration of the year’s movies – and to have fun doing it.” I knew this almost 12 hours before the official announcement. Go me!

It seems the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has indeed chosen someone from way outside the box to host this year's Oscars. Word inside Hollywood is that Hugh Jackman may host the events on Feb. 22!!! But, and it's a BIG but, while the 40-year-old actor has received the AMPAS offer and is very interested, I'm told that he's not yet fully committed yet. I've learned that the people around Jackman want to know exactly what would be expected of him, especially when it comes to opening the Oscar broadcast. One segment of the show which reps for Jackman are objecting to specifically is the joke-telling monologue. "I don't want that for him," an insider says. "He is an actor with big movies behind him and one coming this summer. He didn't work the last 20 years to suddenly be a stand-up comedian." He brilliantly emceed the televised ceremony for the Tony Awards in 2003, 2004 and 2005. We shall see over the next few days what the Academy and Jackman decide. Stay tuned!!!
Breaking News: Oscar host may be announced soon!!I hear that the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has chosen someone "way outside the box" to host the Oscars on February 22nd. And the person is not a TV personality or stand-up comedian. There are also rumblings that the host may not do the usual stand-up routine that starts off almost all Oscar telecasts. In addition, the host is in the movie biz, I've confirmed. The announcement could come as soon as Tuesday if all the ducks are in a row. I will keep you posted.
Pinup model Bettie Page dies at 85Bettie Page, the 1950s secretary-turned-model whose controversial photographs in skimpy attire or none at all helped set the stage for the 1960s sexual revolution, died Thursday. She was 85. The iconic pinup died at a Los Angeles hospital, where she had been on life support since she had a heart attack on December 2nd, according to her agent, Mark Roesler. "She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality," Roesler said. "She is the embodiment of beauty."
Box Office Preview: Keanu Reeves' sci-fi thriller invades the box office
Keanu Reeves has been all over the airwaves lately trying to plug his new sci-fi remake The Day the Earth Stood Still. And by doing so, he is all but guranteeing a huge opening. Based on preliminary numbers, the film should open in the $45 million range, even though the film is suffering from some pretty horrible reviews. In addition, there is a lack of interesting releases this weekend, which will only help the film's cause. The top film for two straight weekends finally falls from No. 1 to second place as Four Christmases tumbles 35% to earn an additional $11 million this weekend. Twilight should be able to stay a bit further ahead than its biggest threat Bolt as the vampire movie banks another $7.5 million in third place this weekend as the Disney cartoon nips at its heels in fourth place with $7 million. Another new holiday themed release Nothing Like the Holidays will debut in fifth place with $6 million. Delgo is also slated to open this weekend, and there is hardly any buzz behind this drab looking animated tale, which is why it will likely open in ninth place with a paltry $2.5 million. The complete Top 10 will be summarized on Sunday.

Check out Jennifer Aniston on the cover of "GQ"Girl knows how to make a statement, huh? Jennifer Aniston puts on a necktie and leaves the rest in the hamper for a provocative GQ cover and sassy interview that addresses rumors about John Mayer. "I am not having his baby. And I have not popped the question," the actress, 39, tells January's GQ (on stands Dec. 23). Interesting shot, no? I mean, after looking at that cover, how can you not love Jen?
Golden Globe nominations announcedThe nominations for the 66th annual Golden Globes were announced Thursday morning, but not on E!, the entertainment channel that prides itself on awards chatter. (I suppose they thought, "Who cares about the poor man's Oscar?") The nominees for best drama are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, Revolutionary Road and Slumdog Millionaire. WHAT"? Where is Milk? Where is Gran Torino? The Reader, when it finally opens, better have me crying for hours and hours, to justify it edging Milk out. The nominees for best comedy or musical are Burn After Reading, Happy-Go-Lucky, In Bruges, Mamma Mia! and Vicky Christina Barcelona. Now, I'll be the first to tell you that there aren't a lot of light Oscar fare at the end of the day, so it's hard to pick good quality Musical/Comedy films, so the simple solution (to me, anyways) is to just combine the categories as the Oscars do. By not doing so, we're stuck honoring films like In Bruges. Really? In Bruges? What I don't understand with these cheap awards is how they can nominate Tom Cruise for Tropic Thunder (yeah, you read that right), but not the film itself which was one of the best comedies of the year. A full list of nominees is below, but some highlights first. Doubt earned Golden Globe nominations for all major actors, but not film, which was another glaring omission from the Drama race. Meryl Streep earns two nominations, so does Kate Winslet. Will this happen at the Oscars? No way for Streep, a deep possibility for Winslet. In addition, Heath Ledger seems to be a shoo-in for the Supporting Actor race, since the rest of his nominees have virtually no chance of winning, except for Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt. (Check out that list below.) I need to go back to bed because my head is hurting after this disaster. And now, the full list!

Oscar Watch: Jerry Lewis to receive Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award
Actor, director, writer and producer Jerry Lewis has been voted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy President Sid Ganis announced today. The award, an Oscar statuette, will be presented to Lewis during the 81st Academy Awards ceremony on February 22, 2009. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is given to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry. This is not to be confused with the Honorary Oscar, which is given yearly, while this Oscar Award has the tendency to skip years. The last recipient was Sherry Lansing, former CEO of Paramount Pictures and the first woman to head a major studio. She received the award for her work in cancer research in 2007.

Guess who's gay on "90210"?

Spoliers ahead, so read with caution!!!
-----
After all the guessing about which male character would come out of the closet on 90210, it's cheerleader Christina Worthy who is the same-sex-oriented cast member, according to inside sources. In the Nov. 18 episode, Christina Worthy (Lauren London) was macking on Dixon pretty obviously during the Spirit Dinner and then again at the lacrosse game. "Who's that?" Silver asked, as Christina strutted away in her miniskirt. But we'll discover in the Jan. 6 episode that Christina has a girlfriend. Christina is described as being bisexual by sources close to the show, which I'm guessing means that she'll also continue to carry a torch for Dixon. Confusing! Oh, and in case you forgot what this chick looked like, check it out below.
Trailer Blazer: "Terminator: Salvation"
It's the first full trailer for Terminator: Salvation, and it will most likely be attatched to this weekend's The Day the Earth Stood Still. At first I was skeptical about the film, but now I seem to be all in! It's an early teaser, so it doesn't give away too much of the plot, but what's there is promising. Christian Bale seems believeable in the role of John Connor and McG, who I first had serious doubt about running this franchise, may be able to pull it off. Two things I loved most of all: Tank treads crushing skulls, an homage to one of the iconic images from the first Terminator and that giant behemoth at the end was pretty awesome, huh? Join in on the fun by checking it out below!

L.A. Critics choose "Wall-E"It's that time of year when all the critics start ringing in their favorite movies of the year. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association went blockbuster, naming Wall-E their Best Picture of the year with The Dark Knight as runner-up. Last year the LAFCA gave There Will Be Blood a big boost when they named it Best Picture after it was left out of the National Board of Review top 10. The win for Wall-E (which also made the NBR and Broadcast Critics top 10 lists) increases its chances of getting into the actual Best Picture race and not simply the animated category, but it still has a lot to overcome. Check out some of the other big winners below!

Jay Leno remains mum on show details
Naturally, when Jay Leno first publicly addressed his forthcoming move to prime time on The Tonight Show last night, he made a big ol' joke out of it. To kick things off, the comedian joked that he was "shocked that NBC still had a prime time." Well put! He went on to say: "We'll start at 10 p.m., right after the last hour of the Today show." Yikes. Still...it's funny. Leno must be making a bundle on this move! As if the man doesn't have enough cash already. but will people watch this show every night at 10 p.m.? Hard to say, since the premise is pretty original and unprecedented. In any event, he had a lot to say, which can be seen and heard after the jump. Although no details emerged, Leno looks excited about the project. Check it out!

Ricky Martin's twins make their debutRicky Martin is finally showing off his twin boys! He commented on the fact that Valentino and Matteo were born via a surrogate by saying, "Adoption was one option, but it's complicated and can take a long time. Surrogacy was an intriguing and faster option. I thought, 'I'm going to jump into this with no fear.'" Great! Now he only needs to come out of the closet which I'm sure will happen soon.
M. Night Shyamalan lines up his cast for "The Last Airbender"M. Night Shyamalan has found the cast for The Last Airbender, his upcoming live-action film based on the popular anime-inspired Nickelodeon series. The youthful group is mostly filled with unknowns who are likely to be household names by the time Paramount opens the first in its potential three-film franchise in July 2010. After an open casting call in Texas, Shyamalan discovered karate star Noah Ringer and offered him the part of Airbender's 12-year old hero, Aang, an Avatar with superpowers who must stop the Fire Nation from destroying the world. Twilight's Jackson Rathbone has been asked to play Aang's pal Sokka, while Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) will star as his sister Katara.
"Twilight" sequel may have a directorThe makers of Twilight, Summit Entertainment, has reportedly offered the sequel director job to Chris Weitz. In addition to directing About a Boy, Weitz was also one of the producers of American Pie. Summit also reportedly liked the job he did directing The Golden Compass, that Nicole Kidman film that was a hot mess of a picture. I hope he doesn't mess this up next.

T.R. Knight negotiating "Grey's Anatomy" exitMore bad news for Grey's Anatomy fans: Multiple sources confirm that T.R. Knight has asked to be released from his contract, a request that both ABC and Grey's show-runner Shonda Rhimes appear poised to grant. "They're working out the details now," whispers an ABC insider. No official comment has been released. There's no word on when Knight would make his final appearance, but, contrary to a reports, he has not walked off the show. "He's still working," maintains my Grey's insider. Knight's rep had no comment.

Is Jay Leno heading to primetime? Jay Leno is coming to primetime TV, according to many sources. NBC is expected to announce at a news conference on Tuesday that the Tonight Show host, who will be succeeded by Conan O'Brien next May, has been given a new contract that will keep him at the network. I hear that the comedian will front a series not unlike the one he currently headlines, and that it will film in the same Burbank complex that has long housed the Tonight Show. (O'Brien and his cohorts will beam from the new NBC/Universal lot in Universal City.) Leno's new show is expected to air five times weekly at 10 P.M. sometime before next fall.
"J In My Pants": Funny or gross?
The extremely not safe for work clip embedded below ran late on SNL this weekend and was notable for a vast number of reasons: The song is the first single off Incredibad, the upcoming CD (due in February) from Andy Samberg's comedy posse, the Lonely Island; there's yet another cameo from Justin Timberlake; and Jamie-Lynn Sigler actually made me laugh out loud. Who would have thought Meadow Soprano had it in her? I thoughtwhile the clip was sort of gross, it was oddly funny. Have another look and see what you think!

"Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke won't do sequelBad news Twilight fans: Summit Entertainment has announced that it will not move forward with director Catherine Hardwicke for the Twilight sequel New Moon. According to Summit's press release, the studio and Hardwicke could not come to terms on a schedule; Summit's plan to release the film at the end of 2009 or beginning of 2010 did not work with the amount of prep time Hardwicke wanted to dedicate to New Moon. It seems that a new director will be tapped for the sequel. According to a statement released by Hardwicke, "I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct New Moon. Directing Twilight has been one the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel—it is a great story."

Box Office Report: "Four Christmases" stays atop at the box office
Ladies and Gentlemen: The holiday season is here and it ain't going anywhere. That point was proven when thwe holiday themed Four Christmases stayed atop the box office for its second weekend, earning an additional $18.2 million, thus bringing its total to $70.8 million. Twilight overcame the competition to land the second place spot by quite a bit, against my better judgement: the teen-vampire flick earned $13.2 million after being in theaters for 3 weeks. It has earned over $138 million during its theatrical run. Bolt, the film that I thought would be runner up to the top spot, would only make the third place finish, adding another $9.7 million to its' total. More holdovers rounded out the Top 5 with Australia earning $7.0 million in fourth place while Quantum of Solace rounded it all out in fifth place with $6.6 million. So, you may be asking yourself: Where are all the new releases? Well, Punisher: War Zone flamed out big time, earning only $4.0 million way down in eigth place while Cadillac Records earned a paltry $3.5 million in ninth place. In addition, Nobel Son opened in only 873 theaters and grossed $371,000. Also of note, Frost/Nixon had a huge opening in only 3 theaters, earning a per-site average of $60,000, meaning it eanred a total of $180,000! WOW! Milk (11th place) and Slumdog Millionaire (12th place) continued to do well in limited release. The complete Top 10 appears below.1. Four Christmases -- $18.2 million
2. Twilight -- $13.2 million
3. Bolt -- $9.7 million
4. Australia -- $7.0 million
5. Quantum of Solace -- $6.6 million
6. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa -- $5.1 million
7. Transporter 3 -- $4.5 million
8. Punisher: War Zone -- $4.0 million
9. Cadillac Records -- $3.5 million
10. Role Models -- $2.6 million

Box Office Preview: "Four Christmases" may repeat at No. 1
--
It's the middle of December and you know what that means: Oscar movies are starting to pop up all over the place. However, as is the norm this time of year, most of those films are starting in a very limited release, usually relegated to New York and Los Angeles. For example, the politically charged Frost/Nixon from Ron Howard is opening today on only a handful of screens, and the same is said for Doubt, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. While both films will have awesome per-scree-averages, neither one has enough to crack the Top 10 in my opinion. That being said, this weekend will be strong for holdovers that are already in wide release. Last weekend's top film Four Christmases, starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, will most likely drop around 50%, and while that might be enough to drop a film to the second place spot, with a lack of interesting new releases, it will allow the holiday themed film to repeat at No. 1 with close to $16 million for the weekend. I have a sinking feeling that second and third places will be a fight to the finish, with strong holdovers Twilight and Bolt fighting for the spots. When the dust settles, Bolt should have what it takes to steal the second place spot from Twilight, with the animated Disney tale taking in $13 million, while the vampire flick Twilight will drop 55% to around $12.5 million. Lionsgate unleashes an action sequel aimed at young men for the second time in as many weeks with Punisher: War Zone which follows up on The Punisher which was released in 2004. The R rating may cut out those 14-year-old boys, but it will give young males some bang at a time when there are no R-rated actioners for this audience. But there is hardly any buzz for this film. Sadly, the film will only muster a fourth place opening with $9 million. Quantum of Solace will edge out Australia for the fifth place spot. In addition, the last new release is Cadillac Records, a drama revisiting the rise of the blues music scene. The R-rated film stars Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, and Beyonce Knowles who also executive produces her first feature. Another film that has essentially no buzz behind it. Reviews have been decent, but not compelling enough to mobilize large crowds. Landing in just 600 or so theaters, Cadillac Records may end up with a mere $2 million this weekend, barely enough to land it in nonth place. Check back here on Sunday for the complete Top 10.

First Look: Madonna's ads for Louis Vuitton surface Check out the new Louis Vuitton ads featuring Madonna in a French bistro setting, as photographed by Steven Meisel. No matter what the Material Girl does, she does it in the most fierce nature imagineable, as evidenced by this shot. And the rumor about Madonna raking in $10 million for the campaign? “It’s very far away from that,” I'm assured by a source.
"Twilight" star Kristen Stewart cast as Joan JettHot on the heels of Twilight's box office killing, Kristen Stewart has been cast as rocker Joan Jett in 2009's The Runaways, according to multiple sources. Video director Floria Sigismondi wrote the screenplay and is directing the film, while Jett will act as an executive producer. The Runaways were hugely influential as the first successful all-girl hard rock band; its members included guitarists Jett and Lita Ford, drummer Sandy West, singer-keyboardist Cherie Currie and bassist Jackie Fox. Perhaps not wanting to be typecast as gawky teen Bella Swan, Stewart will play a stripper in the upcoming Welcome to the Rileys. The resemblance between Stewart and Jett is certainly there, but it this really a good casting move? Post your thoughts!

Get ready to bid farewell to "ER"Quick note: NBC has announced some dates for it's slate of shows heading into the the Winter and Spring season. An hour-long episode of The Office will follow the network's broadcast of Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1. Some sad news was also in the press release: The series finale of ER airs March 12. Heroes' latest volume, "Fugitives," kicks off Feb. 2 at 9 p.m./ET. Chuck will remain at 8 p.m./ET. Low ratings have prompted NBC to trim Knight Rider's order from 21 episodes to 17. As a result, the show's season (and possible series) finale will be broadcast Feb. 25. Celebrity Apprentice will air in two-hour chunks beginning Sunday, March 1. Got it??

Happy Birthday, Britney!
Britney Spears celebrated her birthday by performing her hit singles "Circus" and "Womanizer" on ABC's Good Morning America. Dressed as a ringmaster, Spears made her entrance atop a circus wagon – accompanied by clowns, jugglers and performers dressed as circus animals. As we saw on those videos from overseas, Spears lip-synched her way through the songs, but thank goodness she was able to stick her moves, which had a vibrant "Britney" feel to them. Plus, it has leaked that Spears will be going on tour next year! Her last major tour - the Onyx Hotel - was a handful of years ago. The Pussycat Dolls will be opening for Spears on the new tour. The first show is March 3rd in New Orleans and the last concert will be April 28th in Rosemont, IL. Happy Birthday Britney! Here is the list of proposed dates!
