Box Office Report: "Underworld Awakening" tops weekend

The weekend Box Office was buoyed by a few new releases, which all had decent releases over the three-day span. On top of the pack was Underworld Awakening, a 3D fourth installment of the Underworld franchise, which scared up $25.4 million in its three days. This registers the second-best debut in the franchise’s history (Underworld: Evolution started with $26.9 million in its first weekend in 2006), although that number seems much less healthy when you factor in "Awakening"'s $70 million budget. In second place, Red Tails successfully got off the ground with $19.1 million. The George Lucas-produced WWII picture pulled off a decent start, which would have seemed impossible a few short weeks ago. Last week’s victor, Contraband, which also stars Kate Beckinsale (who is having a very good January!), stuck around in third place with $12.2 million. The Mark Wahlberg action title has thus far gained $46 million since its debut. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close expanded into 2,630 locations on Friday, but the 9/11 drama is being met with weaker-than-expected results: It pulled in $10.6 million in its first wide weekend. Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire brought in a tepid $9 million, good enough for fifth place.
